Read Together Palm Beach Selects Jewish Book

Read Together Palm Beach County has selected The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a past winner of AJL's Sydney Taylor Book Award in the Teen Readers category, as its 2010 discussion book. The title was originally published in Australia as an adult book, but was marketed as a Young Adult book in the US because of Zusak's previous successes with YA books in the US.

As the Palm Beach County Library web site says: "This is a story told by “Death.” This is a story about a courageous nine-year-old book thief. This is a story about Liesel Meminger, an orphaned German girl whose foster family befriends and hides a Jewish boxer during the height of Nazi power. This is a story about Liesel learning to read in order to understand her personal losses and the world she sees unfolding around her. This is a story about books and the power of words to harm and to heal. This is the story about the human condition."

Discussions about The Book Thief will be held in various branch libraries around the county through the month of April, 2010. Click here to see the full schedule.
