On September 21, 2012, SFAJL met at Temple Beth Am in Miami. Our host was Etta Gold. Ten members were present.
Etta Gold and Heidi Estrin reported on the 2012 AJL conference, held in Pasadena, CA, and encouraged chapter members to join the umbrella group and attend conferences. The next annual conference will be held in Houston, TX, June 16-19, 2013.
All members present are members of the SSC division (Schools, Synagogues, and Centers) and are librarians in synagogue and school settings. Discussion revolved around promoting the library to young children and their families. We also discussed the PJ Library, AJL's digitization of its newsletter, AJL's upcoming strategic planning process, and the online Jewish Book Carnival. Members shared news about upcoming local Jewish literary events.
SFAJL has not been active recently, but the members made the decision to revive a regular schedule of meetings. We will have three meetings a year in the fall, winter and spring. One will be held in Miami-Dade County, hosted by Etta Gold at Temple Beth Am. One will be held in Broward County, hosted by Lorelei Ennis at Temple Dor Dorim. One will be held in Palm Beach County, most likely hosted by Heidi Estrin at Congregation B'nai Israel. These will be lunchtime meetings, with food provided. We will promote the meetings beyond our membership to other librarians and book-lovers, to encourage new membership.
Thanks to all who attended!
