AJL Goes Print-on-Demand

The Association of Jewish Libraries has begun publishing materials using the CreateSpace print-on-demand service from Amazon.com. This allows AJL to offer high-quality professionally printed and bound monographs. To kick off AJL's relationship with this service, they offer two important titles:

Creating a Collection

The newly-revised fifth edition of Creating a Collection: A Resource Booklist for a Beginning Judaic Library by Merrily Hart is now available for purchase. This very useful annotated subject bibliography is a guide to developing a core collection in a synagogue, school, or community center library.

Jewish Classics for Kids

This annotated bibliography of Jewish children's classics by expert Linda R. Silver is a compilation of classic titles from biblical to modern times, organized by subject with a glossary, and title and author indexes.

Both monographs may be ordered through Amazon's web site.

Creating a Collection on Amazon
Jewish Classics for Kids on Amazon

The list price is $20.00 plus shipping. Both titles are eligible for Amazon's Free Super Saver Shipping program if included in an order totaling over $25.00.

Library Perfume

This may be a little frivolous, but it certainly is intriguing. CB "I Hate Perfume" by perfume maker Christopher Brosius, has created a scent called "In the Library" described as "English Novel taken from a Signed First Edition of one of my very favorite novels, Russian & Moroccan leather bindings, worn cloth and a hint of wood polish."

Brosius says:

I love books, particularly old ones. I cannot pass a second hand bookshop and rarely come away without at least one additional volume. I now have quite a collection!

Whenever I read, the start of the journey is always opening the book and breathing deeply. Don't you find there are few things more wonderful than the smell of a much-loved book? Newly printed books certainly smell very different from older ones. The ink is so crisp. I've also noticed that books from different periods & different countries also have very different smells. And then there are the scents of different bindings: leather is marvelous of course but I find a peculiar pleasure in musty worn clothbound books as well. Perhaps just a hint of mildew!

The main note in this scent was copied from one of my favorite books – I happened to find a signed first edition of this novel a few years ago in London. I was more than a little excited because there were only ever a hundred in the first place!

Things to Sign Up For

ANNUAL AJL CONVENTION

Registration information and forms for the 2009 AJL convention are available on the AJL web site at www.jewishlibraries.org. If you go to the website, on the left you will see a drop-down for the Convention. From there, you can download the registration form (actually, you can type it up ON the website, and then just print it up), links to the hotel for reservations, and information for exhibitors and advertisers. And the tentative schedule is online as well.

The dates of the convention are July 5 – July 8, just before the ALA convention in Chicago. You are invited to register NOW, since they've set a "recession special", and have rolled the prices back to less than those of Convention 2007 – the full 2009 registration price is $450.

For information, feel free to contact convention organizers Cheryl.Banks@gmail.com or Shoshanah Seidman at sseidman@northwestern.edu.

Are YOU Valuable?

In these days of shrinking budgets, it's more important than ever that librarians be able to show that their libraries provide value. After all, you don't want to be the "fat" that gets trimmed when your organization tightens its belt (sorry for the mixed metaphor)!

AJL wants to help YOU prevent such a dire situation. That is why we are flying Joanne Roukens down from New Jersey to offer her acclaimed "VALUING LIBRARIES" workshop!

On Thursday, January 8, 2009, from 10am to about 3 or 4pm, Joanne will lead us through hands-on exercises that any library can use to clearly demonstrate its value to patrons, management, and other stakeholders. She'll teach us to evaluate our programs and services, calculate the "return on investment" to our institutions, and articulate the value of our libraries in a demonstrable way.

I attended this workshop when it was held at the Association of Jewish Libraries annual convention last June in Cleveland, OH, and I must tell you that it was absolutely amazing. Not only is Joanne an intelligent and entertaining speaker, but the importance of the content is absolutely crucial to libraries. The tough economic times make it especially relevant, but we all know that libraries need to prove their value at all times, so that we don't get taken for granted. Although the program is coming to South Florida on a work day, I'd say it's absolutely worth missing one day of work for a session that can help your library on such a profound level.

The workshop will be held at CAJE (Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education) in Miami, at 4200 Biscayne Blvd. There is no charge for the program (original $15 fee has been waived!), and kosher lunch will be provided to participants for free. RSVP is required: email info@sfaj.org.

Joanne Roukens was named the New Jersey Library Association's 2007 Librarian of the Year. She's the Executive Director of Highlands Regional Library Cooperative in Denville, NJ, which serves 975 libraries in a 7-county region. Above, you can see Joanne's terrific attitude, as she poses with the NJLA SuperLibrarian mascot.

THE NIGHT OF THE BURNING: DEVORAH'S STORY by Linda Press Wulf
(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2006; Bloomsbury, London, 2007 and 2008).

A Polish girl and her little sister endure the ravages of the First World War, a pogrom in her Jewish village, and the loss of her parents. Then a kindly philanthropist called Isaac Ochberg
transports them, in a group of 200 orphans, to safety in South Africa -- and separation. This novel was inspired by the childhood of the author's mother-in-law.

  • "Forward"
Reviews

"An insightful exploration of the effects of traumatic experiences, and an ultimately hopeful portrait of a young girl. ... [A] masterful job of showing the complexity of relationships among religious and ethnic groups in [South Africa and Poland]. ... The relationships between the protagonist, her adoptive parents, and their domestic worker are particularly well realized. However, the light that shines through this book is the carefully imagined and described process of painful but ultimatley positive personal growth that Devorah experiences." --School Library Journal

[T]he story is gripping . . .." —Hazel Rochman, Booklist

"Heartbreaking & poignant with a positive conclusion . . . A haunting work of historical fiction" —Kirkus Reviews

"Devorah's narration alternates between flashbacks to life in the sisters' Polish village of Domachevo and their later experiences as orphans, and both tales are equally touching and engrossing; her observations of the way black South Africans are accorded underclass
status within their own country leads to provocative comparisons with her own sudden class reversal as a member of a relatively privileged white community." —Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"With bittersweet overtones, it reminds the reader of human savagery yet also shows the caring strength of one man and the power of sisterly ties." —selected and reviewed by Lesley Agnew, leading independent bookseller, for "Teenage Previews for March-June," The Bookseller, U.K.

"A simply written, but extremely powerful, novel . . . Wulf displays great skill in her poignant handling of one of the darkest periods of 20th century history. [The sisters] are drawn with remarkable sympathy and understanding . . . [A] very impressive achievement . . . conveying to young readers some notion of the depths of evil to which humanity can sink, but at the same time demonstrating to them the strengths of resilience, tolerance & love."—Robert Dunbar, The Irish Times
